GENERAL PROBLEMS & PRECAUTIONS DURING WELDING

PROBLEMS

PRECAUTIONS

A.
POROSITY
  Damp electrodes Preheat the electrode.
Long arc length Keep the arc length short to the diameter size of electrode wire.
Rusty or dirty surface Clean the surface / joint area thoroughly.
High sulphur in steel to be welded Don’t use such material.
Sluggishness of the weld metal. Increase the current and weave briskly.

B.
 SLAG INCLUSION
Dirty faces of the joint Clean the joint thoroughly, if need be with the help of sand paper.
Improper arrangement of passes Arrange the passes systematically.
Inadequate cleaning after each pass Carefully remove the slag after each pass.
Large diameter electrode in a narrow groove Use right size of electrode.

C.
 LACK OF FUSION
Incorrect joint preparation and fit up   Fit both the surfaces properly.
Use of too large or small diameter electrode        Use right size of electrode.
Improper arrangements of passes   Arrange the passes systematically.
Lesser than recommended current   Always maintain recommended current.

D.
 UNDER CUTTING
Higher than recommended current Always maintain recommended current.
Larger diameter electrode   Use right size of electrode.
High welding speed.                              Keep reasonable speed.
Improper angle of welding Set hand to maintain proper angle.
Excessive weaving                                Careful weaving.
Damp electrodes                                        Preheat the electrodes.
Mill scale on parent metal                Clean the surface/joint area.

E.
 OVERLAPPING
Lesser than recommended current         Always maintain recommended current.
Low welding speed                                     Keep reasonable speed.
Improper angle of welding               Set hand to maintain proper angle.
Large arc length                                          Keep the arc length short to the core diameter of  electrodes.

F.
 CRACKS
Damp electrodes                                             Preheat the electrode.
Bad fit up                                                       Improve fit up.
Welding surfaces are too thick                    Select proper size of  electrode.
Cracks in crater                                                Before breaking the arc, apply two or three circular motion to achieve the desired bead height & then only withdraw the arc gradually.
Welding surfaces are of alloy steel with high Carbon, along with other hardening elements e.g. Molybdenum,
Vanadium, Nickel & Chromium etc.
Use hydrogen controlled electrodes freshly dried in an oven and preheating of the joint area.

G.
SPATTERING
Longer arc length                           Keep the arc length short i.e. the diameter of the core of electrode.
Damp electrodes                                              Preheat the electrode.

H.
POOR PENETRATION
Very short arc length.                                                    Maintain the arc length to the size of the core diameter of electrode.
Fast welding speed                                                 Keep reasonable speed.
Large diameter electrode in a narrow groove                   Use right size of electrode.
Lesser than recommended current               Maintain the recommended current.
